A series of unexpected tornadoes slammed central lowa yesterday, injuring at least 17 people and destroying buildings in three cities. Residents and even meteorologists expressed surprise as the tornadoes barreled toward Marshalltown, Pella and Bondurant. "This morning, it didn't look like tornadic supercells were possible," Alex Krull, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Des Moines, said yesterday. "If anything, we were expecting we could get some large hail, if strong storms developed."
