A Nevada man pleaded guilty yesterday to violating the Endangered Species Act after harming federally protected Devils Hole pupfish In a unit of Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. In addition, Trenton Sargent, 28, pleaded guilty to destroying U.S. property and possessing a firearm as a felon. Sargent hit a gate with his all-terrain vehicle, broke surveillance cameras and shot at the gate in April 2016, according to prosecutors. Sargent and two co-defendants climbed the fence, and he then walked into Devils Hole and smashed fish eggs and larvae in the middle of spawning season, Sargent said. Violating the Endangered Species Act could result in a maximum sentence of a year in prison and a $50,000 fine. The other two charges, both felonies, could bring up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines.
