One million wild birds, some rare and endangered, are killed yearly at a wildlife site in Iran, conservationists warn in a letter to the journal Science. They say the slaughter needs to stop at the Fereydunkenar wetlands, or several endangered species could be wiped out. Threatened birds at the refuge include white-headed ducks, redbreasted geese, lesser white-fronted geese, northern lapwings and wintering raptors. Some subspecies of the Siberian crane are thought to already have been eliminated. The site includes three major lagoons and attracts hunters both local and global.
