Bloody red shrimp could be bad omen for Lake Superior

A single bloody red shrimp has been captured at a harbor on Lake Superior, sparking concerns that the invasive species could be establishing itself in the ecosystem. It's possible that the small shrimp was already dead after being discharged from a cargo ship. The shrimp was collected in July during a routine invasive species survey in the Twin Ports harbor. The Fish and Wildlife Service later identified the species. "We have no way of knowing how it got here," said Doug Jensen, an invasive species specialist with the Minnesota Sea Grant program at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. Lake Superior hasn't experienced an invasion in years. Bloody red shrimp have established themselves in Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, Lake Huron and Lake Ontario.
