Legendary Yosemite climber dies at 82

Yosemite climbing legend Tom Frost died Friday at his Oakdale, Calif., home at age 82. Frost was a pioneer during Yosemite National Park's golden age of climbing, scaling El Capitan and other formations, accompanied by such climbers as Royal Robbins, Chuck Pratt and Yvon Chouinard. He and Robbins became the first to ascend El Capitan's Salathe Wall in 1961. "We loved the movement in climbing, the beauty of the creation, the depth of our companionship, and the discovery of the unknown," Frost wrote in 2002. "Those El Cap climbs we did together changed my life. They changed who I was." He was also a leader of the "clean climbing" movement. An aeronautical engineer, Frost invented a tool called the "realized ultimate reality piton" that allowed climbers to make less of an impact on rock faces and is still in use today.
