Green groups sue Coast Guard over oil spill plan

The Environmental Law & Policy Center and the National Wildlife Federation yesterday filed a lawsuit against the Coast Guard over a plan the agency approved for oil spills in the Great Lakes. The groups said the Coast Guard's approval of the Northern Michigan Area Contingency Plan in 2017 violated the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, which requires oil spill contingency plans for waterways used to transport oil. They argue that any individual response plan approved under the NMACP - like the one for Enbridge Inc.'s Line 5 pipeline - would be invalid.
