It may take months before the awful stench at Jefferson Parish landfill goes away, and Louisiana residents are not happy. "It's probably going to get worse before it gets better," said Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality Secretary Chuck Carr Brown. At a special council meeting Friday, residents of the parish spoke for hours about being awoken by the smell and experiencing headaches, burning throats and more. They described a pattern of officials dodging responsibility. "I'd like to know who dropped the ball," said River Ridge resident Lisa Janssen. Officials say it may take up to three months just to consider the process of closing the dump, which had begun accepting liquid industrial waste.
