Congressional Democrats are promising an all-out battle against the Trump administration's rollback of Obama-era fuel economy standards, while warning automakers that the plan is unlikely to pass legal muster. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who fended off efforts to weaken California's waiver authority under the Clean Air Act when she was speaker, called the plan a "dangerous assault on clean air and public health in California and across the nation." "Californians have seen and felt the impact of smog on our lives, and we will relentlessly defend our state's right to protect the air our children breathe with robust fuel economy and pollution standards when federal standards fall short," she said in a statement. "We will continue to work with automakers to overcome the Trump obstruction to build cleaner, more affordable and safe vehicles for our communities." California's Democratic Sens. Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein today introduced a Senate resolution supporting the Golden State's waiver authority and the Obama-era program.
