Iconic whale jawbone removed from home on national seashore

An iconic whale jawbone has been removed from outside the historic Captain Edward Penniman House on the Cape Cod National Seashore. The giant finback bone - which served as an arch over the driveway entrance - had deteriorated and become a danger to the public, said seashore Superintendent Brian Carlstrom. Beginning in the late 1700s, jawbones were used in whaling communities to mark sidewalks or seaside landmarks.
