USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service said it sees little environmental or health risk in stepping up pesticide treatments in a 24-county area where officials anticipate outbreaks of grasshoppers and Mormon crickets, which are native but can cause heavy damage to crops and livestock forage when they appear in large enough numbers.
