Environmental health groups have filed a petition urging the Food and Drug Administration to ban all "forever chemicals" in food packaging, saying the agency has bungled its handling of specific compounds. "They have taken half steps and haven't followed through, but now is the time to really address this issue in the big picture instead of making assumptions that may not be grounded in science," said the Environmental Defense Fund's chemicals policy director, Tom Neltner. The petition is largely motivated by documents recently released to EDF under the Freedom of Information Act showing FDA's communications with manufacturers of per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS).
