Prolific travel author and adventurer Barry Lopez dies at 75

Barry Lopez, an award-winning author who detailed his 50 years of travel to 80 countries, embracing landscapeswith environmental and spiritual sensibilities and our responsibility to care for them, died on Christmas Day. Hewas 75.Lopez died in Eugene, Ore., after a long battle with prostate cancer, his family said.Throughout his travels, Lopez wrote nearly 20 books on natural history studies along with essays and shortstories. Lopez was awarded the National Book Award in 1986 for "Arctic Dreams: Imagination and Desire in aNorthern Landscape," a chronicle from five years living in solitude and crafting mystical scenes out of howlingArctic blizzards.
