Deadline looms: 'The Pebble world is watching'

Friday could be a big day for the fate of the Pebble mine. If EPA wants the Army Corps of Engineers to do a more stringent review of the project's environmental impacts, it must send a letter to the corps' Alaska District by July 26. And that letter has to contain specific language, saying that the Pebble mine "will have substantial and unacceptable impacts to an Aquatic resource of National Importance" — in this case, Alaska's Bristol Bay and the salmon fishery there. If the letter isn't sent, or doesn't include that language, then the Army Corps can carry on unimpeded with its review of the project.
