Vt. bill aims to ban PFAS in consumer products

A bill seeking to limit a class of highly toxic chemicals in consumer products is making its way through Vermont'sLegislature.State senators unanimously voted S. 295 out of the Senate Health and Welfare Committee, and it now awaits afloor vote before the House takes it up.The bill would ban the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in rugs and carpets, food packaging, andfirefighting foam in Vermont. The bill also would add PFAS reporting requirements to the Chemicals of HighConcern in Children's Products program, which requires manufacturers to report chemical use to Vermont'sHealth Department."For the most part, the key provisions are essentially saying we want manufacturers to stop using this stuff in foodpackaging or firefighting foam," said Paul Burns, executive director of the Vermont Public Interest ResearchGroup (VPIRG).
