Industry clings to trade group as utilities abandon ship

Coal-fired electricity will likely keep shrinking, but its trade group appears done losing members after a rough week. The American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity, rebranded as America's Power, lost its last two utility members this week. With looming promises to close coal plants, American Electric Power Co. (AEP) and Southern Co. announced they will not renew their memberships in the trade group dedicated to saving them (Climatewire, Dec. 2). But ACCCE's remaining 30 members don't appear to be going anywhere. When contacted by E&E News this week, none said they planned to follow the utilities. Most defended staying on what critics call a sinking ship.
