The partial government shutdown is posing a threat to research described as vital to the health of the Great Lakes and the people who depend on them for drinking water. The funding lapse is affecting efforts to keep invasive Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes and to monitor harmful algae that bloom in Lake Erie every year, said Bradley Cardinale, director of the Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research, an institute sponsored by NOAA and the University of Michigan.
