The German physicist Martin Bojowald has recently been in the news for his devel-nopment of equations that indicate that there was indeed a universe before the BignBang, which collapsed into itself before ‘our’ space–time began. Despite this, in hisnview, we shall never be able to know anything about the true beginning of thenuniverse, the actual cosmogony. It is Andrew Gregory’s contention in his new booknthat there are perennial (and system-independent) ‘core-problems’ in cosmogony,nwhich manifest themselves in different terms at different times but remain constant
