Do designers employ their Macs as a further right (or left) arm? Fundamentally, yes; designers do rely on their Macs too heavily. However, it must be stressed that this right (or left) arm is completely removed from the brain of the designer. As any designer knows, initially you plan, creatively strategise and conceptualise on paper, not on the machine. The basics of solid design are founded on individuals interacting with each other to develop ideas; without this process there would not be design. The Apple Mac, however fast it becomes, will never replace free thought.
