Mainland China now makes optical fiber preform; Taiwan offers new technologies, while Hong Kong makers focus on QC. Mainland China's sales revenues from fiber-optic cables in 2005 totaled $11.2 billion, up 12 percent from 2004, according to the Ministry of Information Industry. Most of the over 170 companies in the line are joint ventures, with a total yearly capacity of 40 million units. The top ten makers, including Hengtong Group, Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable Co. Ltd (YOFC) and Fiberhome Telecommunication Technologies Co. Ltd, control about 80 percent of the market, with fierce competition forcing some small and medium-scale manufactures to leave the line over the past two years.
