摘要

The paper comprises quite interesting new data on the seismicity of the Middle Caspian Basin adjacent to the southeastern Caucasus. These data, which testify to the mantle earthquake sources that reach a depth of 150 km, are of principal importance because, up to now, such deep seismicity was unknown in the Apsheron Threshold that adjoins the Middle Caspian Basin in the south. However, the geodynamic interpretation of the results obtained provokes the serious objections expounded below. On the basis of the established earthquake hypo-centers, the authors draw a seismic focal zone that plunges beneath the Greater Caucasus, thus reflecting, in their opinion, the thrusting of the Scythian Plate (the southern edge of the Eurasian lithospheric plate) under the Greater Caucasus Orogen. In doing so, they attach much importance to the left-lateral strike-slip Agra-khan-Tbilisi-Levant Lineament crossing the Greater Caucasus, as was described in detail by Koronovsky. They suppose the Greater Caucasus to have a southern vergence west of this lineament and a northern ver-gence east of this tectonic line that do not explain the thrusting of the Greater Caucasus over the Scythian Plate.
