The writers thank the discusser for his interest in our work. The discusser commented on the modified moist tamping method used in our study, the use of post-consolidation void ratios instead of relative density for silty soils, and the influence of soil type as it relates to sample preparation methods and its affect on liquefaction resistance.rnThe discusser indicates that the procedure by Amini and Qi (2000), which involves increasing the amount of soil with each constant height layer, provides uniform samples. This method, as well as that initially proposed by Ladd (1978), requires very accurate measurements of the height of each layer as it is placed to construct a triaxial specimen. One advantage to the modified moist tamping procedure used in our work is that it eliminates the need to accurately measure layer heights, which can be difficult. Instead, the compaction energy (i.e., drop height) is controlled, which in our opinion, is easier and more repeatable.
