Alan Douglas Tweedie, 1918-2006

Emeritus Professor Alan Tweedie, foundation Professor of Geography at The University of Newcastle, Australia, was a founding member of the Institute of Australian Geographers and was its fifth President (1965-1966). Alan came to Australia from New Zealand in 1952 as Lecturer in Geography at the University of Queensland, and moved to a Senior Lectureship at Newcastle University College in 1955. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1961, and was made Professor of Geography when the University became autonomous in 1965. He retired in 1980 to live in Canberra.
