Allies as Rivals promises a focus on US-Europe and US-Japan relations during and after the Cold War. Several of the contributors do exactly that while others discuss a Changing World System in general. The US-Europe-Japan triangle is placed into a Braudelian-Marxian context in this volume based on the 27th Annual Conference of the Political Economy of the World-System. Next to analyses of the United States, Europe and Japan in the 1945-1991 and post-1991 periods, others recapitulate the much longer history of the world system, from Portuguese expansion in the 15th century to today's informal US empire.
