This excellent piece of scholarship has a significance much wider than its title immediately suggests, and it deserves to attract a readership well beyond those with a specialised interest in Sarawak. The book is a longitudinal study of agricultural, societal, ethno-cultural, environmental, economic and political dynamics and, most significantly, the intricate inter-relations between these dimensions of change. The study is set in north-western Borneo or what is now East Malaysia, but it has an immediate salience for those interested in other parts of Southeast Asia and, no doubt, for those working further afield.
