B.L.C. Johnson, 1919-2011

Basil Leonard Clyde Johnson was born in Cockpen, Midlothian, Scotland, on 21 November 1919. His membership of a peripatetic Anglican clerical family, which moved from the UK to New Zealand in 1928 and back again in 1935, gave him a deep affinity for geography. In 1938 Basil went up to King's College London to read geography under Professor S.W. Wooldridge. His university career was cut short when he volunteered for war service.
