摘要

Wandering through the alley streets of Fells Point in Baltimore today, one is apt to see a wide variety of people: the increasingly Hispanic demographic of these neighbourhoods remains peppered with white professionals and also still includes a few white and black working class homeowners who've lived in the area all of their lives. Salsa music vies with the sound of helicopters droning overhead, and on a Sunday afternoon the smell of cooking pork, perhaps overlaying the faint tinge of garbage or stale beer, lies heavy in the narrow streets. In some ways, in other words, the alley houses of Baltimore still serve their original purpose, which Mary Ellen Hayward explores in Baltimore's Alley Houses: the housing in single-family homes of Baltimore's working class.
