Auto-ethnography and autobiography in geographical research

Faulkner and Macpherson hold subtly different positions on writing, and the writer. Faulkner is reflective of the process while Macpherson's (alleged) comment is either a retort, a confession by a time-poor supermodel (at the time), or a statement about unabashed self-obsession. Then, there is Cindy Sherman (Fig. 1), who presents herself in her own photographs as a life-like mannequin, an image of someone else with a story. Cindy is actor in her own (visual) drama, an artist who reflects the world outside herself to the viewer in strange, often uncomfortable, ways.
