Arthur K. Kordon: Applying computational intelligence: how to create value

Arthur K. Kordon is a research and development leader in Dow Chemical. He has applied evolutionary computation in manufacturing and new product design for Dow. Without doubt Kordon's book is an atypical but appealing and refreshing way of approaching computational intelligence and its applications. A big selling point is its extensive use of diagrams and illustrations. Its main strength is that Kordon comprehensively analyses how to apply computational intelligence to give real return on investment. He devotes complete chapters to comparing CI to traditional approaches and to discussing in what sense CI has a "competitive advantage". Several more chapters are devoted to convincing the reader of the benefits of CI, for example by describing successful industrial applications and arguing for his method of applying CI to real business problems, including marketing CI within business. Again he gives real examples, including some failures. The latter help to understand the limitations as well as the potential of computational intelligence.
