‘In your experience’: research as gendered cultural translation ‘Según su experiencia’: la investigación como traducción cultural generizada

Current debates on the use of interpreters in social research have seldom attended to the politics of translation in the production of knowledge. Where the use of interpreters has been analysed, this has primarily been with a concern for the validity and accuracy of the translated text rather than a sustained analysis of how translation shapes meaning-making. This article draws on an illustration from a research project on gender and violence in times of conflict to reflect on the dilemmas of working across languages for feminist anti-racist work. Treating translation as an act that is necessarily cross-cultural and political, this article attends to the gendered and spatial-political consequences of the co-construction of meaning in the interview process. It argues that a ‘transparent’ translation is neither possible nor desirable if we take seriously the ways that language produces meaning in research. It considers the centrality of the translators and translation decisions in the production of all knowledge and argues for a sustained reflection on the politics of cross-language work. Far from reflecting a limitation of cross-language research, this reflection itself provides useful analytic starting points for interrogating, in this case, the gendered politics of knowledge construction. Muy pocas veces los actuales debates sobre el uso de los intérpretes en la investigación social han prestado atención a la política de la traducción en la producción de conocimiento. Allí donde el uso de intérpretes ha sido analizado, lo ha sido principalmente con cuidado de mantener la validez y la exactitud del texto traducido en vez de ser un análisis riguroso de cómo la traducción da forma a la significación. Este artículo se basa en una ilustración de un proyecto de investigación sobre género y violencia en tiempos de conflicto para reflexionar sobre los dilemas de trabajar entre más de un idioma para el trabajo feminista antiracista. Tratando la traducción como un acto que es necesariamente político y atraviesa culturas, este artículo se ocupa de las consecuencias generizadas y espacio-políticas de la co-construcción de significado en el proceso de la entrevista. Propone que la traducción ‘transparente’ no es posible ni deseable si tomamos en serio las formas en que el lenguaje produce significados en la investigación. Considera la centralidad de los traductores y de las decisiones de la traducción en la producción de todo conocimiento y aboga por una reflexión sostenida sobre la política del trabajo multilingüe. Lejos de reflejar una limitación de la investigación multilingüe, esta reflexión en sí misma provee ciertos puntos de partida analíticos para interrogar, en este caso, la política generizada de la construcción del conocimiento.
