Action-researcher, activist, writer, and academic Professor Irene Tinker's pioneering work in gender and development has helped to establish the field as we know it today. In her long and distinguished career, she has travelled and researched widely, established organisations, and worked in academe, helping to make sure that women's lives are no longer ignored, either in international development, or more widely. While many of us might now take the existence of âgender and developmentâ as a discipline for granted, Irene's work shows us that a concern for women's rights and gender equality in development work and beyond was something hard fought for, and worthy of recognition in its own right.
