The fashion for 'pop-up' retail spaces has turned out to be surprisingly permanent. Over the past few years, retailers have realised the huge potential of temporary shops, bars and restaurants: they are cheap to set up and can take advantage of short-term leases to exploit particular retail opportunities - Christmas, for example. And if a pop-up turns out to be successful, well, why not keep it open?
