ALL ABOARD FOR HEATHERWICK STUDIO'S NEW BUS FOR LONDON

Eight new London buses designed by Thomas Heatherwick are to go into service at the end of this month. Designed in collaboration with bus manufacturer Wrightbus, the new double-decker is a reworking of London's iconic Routmaster bus and, like it, has an open rear deck allowing passengers to hop on and off and a conductor to deal with tickets.Called the New Bus for London, it has three doors and, unlike the original Routemaster, its rear platform can be closed, allowing the bus to be operated by the driver when a conductor is not present. According to Heatherwick Studio, the bus is 15 per cent more fuel efficient than existing hybrid buses and 40 per cent more fuel efficient than conventional diesel-powered double-deckers.
