James Meyer, president and sole principal of Meyer Capital Management, has come a long way from his college days in the 1980s working as a runner at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, but he still applies those lessons he learned on the floor in managing $230 million. In fact, with money under management nearly doubling since the end of 2003, Meyer has found his order execution skills becoming increasingly more important. Not that the Barrington, Ill.-based CTA is facing capacity issues now but with a compound annual return of 25% since 1999 and a solid staff and back office, Meyer is expecting to take on additional assets. While Meyer had already learned the language of the floor, it wasn't until he graduated from Loyola University in 1990 with a degree in economics that he developed his strategies. It was working as a research analyst for introducing broker Martin James and Co. where he developed his technical trading approach, which he built into his program in 1998.
