Trading advisors always are hunting for new markets in which to diversify, especially as institutional investment grows and capacity concerns multiply. Exchanges have responded with new products that may provide new opportunities to diversify with markets and strategies. Adding new markets to a commodity trading advisor's (CTA) system is a great way for a manager to add capacity. Because most diversified programs are developed to work on multiple markets, adding contracts can be the least disruptive way for a manager to grow. Adding non-correlated markets can improve risk-adjusted returns as well as make room for more investment. Of course, many large managers have to drop markets as they take on additional money under management. Those managers must look for markets to add to their program that will be liquid enough to trade in their system and maintain diversification.
