Ironwood: Built to last

Ironwood Asset Management was named for the Ironwood tree found in Arizona's Senora desert, which is near the birthplace of Ironwood's President Sreekanth Rao. The Ironwood is famous for its longevity ― living up to 1,000 years ― which is why Rao chose it as a symbol for his Chicago-based commodity trading advisor. "We are in this for the long run," he says. Rao already knew he wanted to manage money when as a sophomore at Columbia University he interned at Bank Julius Baer. Working at the bank's proprietary trading desk, Rao was given access to futures trading data that enabled him to begin developing technical trading strategies. Despite his preference for futures, Rao's first opportunity out of college was with the securities trading arm of Datek in 1995.
