The size of the commodity trading advisor universe is constantly expanding in terms of money under management, number of managers and styles. Specialty managers are attracting interest from institutional investors wishing to round out their portfolio. For years the term managed futures was synonymous with a systematic long-term trend following approach. While the recent impressive swell in money under management has to a large extent been concentrated in managers who fit that definition, it is that expansion that is spurring the growth in numbers of niche managers.
