Endless paradox: Environmentalism in transition

摘要

The environmental movement is in a period of significant transition. Its emerging forms and directions suggest a substantial departure from the environmentalism of earlier decades. Amongst longtime environmentalists, the transition may be cause for consternation. To newer participants, it may be an opportunity to approach problems and opportunities in new ways and with different assumptions. This essay explores the implications of this critical transition. Further, it examines the ambivalent and paradoxical nature of environmentalism, which, it is argued, may shed light on the movement's long term prospects.
