This special issue is based on the best papers from the 13th Workshop on Workflows in Support of Large-Scale Science (WORKS) [1], held in conjunction with the 2018 International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC) [2], on November 11, 2018 in Dallas, TX, USA. The workshop focused on the many facets of data-intensive workflow management systems, ranging from job execution to service management and the coordination of data, service and job dependencies. It attracted a large number of scientific papers that contributed to the state-of-the-art in workflows research. All the papers selected for this special issue have been substantially extended from their original versions and underwent a rigorous peer-review process. This special issue is composed of eight highly rated research papers that cover a broad range of issues in the scientific workflow lifecycle, which include: stream-based workflow data processing in cloud environments, energy-aware workflow scheduling, transparent data provenance tracking, workflow simulation, IoT workflows, workflow performance data capture and analysis, and parallel pattern-based workflow management.
