Complex problem-solving environments for Grid computing

The solution to many problems of scientific and commercial interest is becoming increasingly multi-disciplinary and/or collaborative. The computational resources needed to solve these classes of problem are often distributed and heterogeneous. Thus, not only are problems becoming more complex in terms of their expression and formulation, but also the techniques and resources needed to solve them are also becoming increasingly complex. A problem-solving environment (PSE) is an integrated computing environment (or portal) that provides all the resources for solving a problem or class of problem, and aims to support the end-user in handling complexity at a number of levels. At one level PSEs can assist users in formulating well-posed problems. For example, this could involve ensuring that the inputs to a particular problem are self-consistent.
