Aerospace giant Boeing has played a role in some of the most memorable technological innovations of the past century, but one of the more intriguing in-novations is one that most will never see—tiny, two-dimensional (2D) bar codes etched onto the most unlikely surfaces, even the edges of turbine blades. These bar codes, the result of a process called direct part marking, are one small element of a much larger movement in aerospace and other industries to provide complete part traceability, even in environments where traditional labels and tags simply don't work.
