摘要

Linear feedback shift registers (LFSRs) have found many applications in digital signal processing and communication systems. LFSR design are based on the selection of a primitive polynomial. This paper investigates the optimal selection of LFSR primitive polynomials in a multi-step implementation. It will be demonstrated that the popular polynomials by Stahnke give suboptimal designs. Wire and maximum fan-in measures based on the state-space matrix description of the multistep LFSR are introduced and show good correlation with the FPGA synthesis data for area (gate count) and registered performance, respectively. A complete list of optimal polynomials up to order 128 is provided.
