摘要

This article looks at examples of the “classic” type of crime-story writers in the context of the Second World War, as writers adapted plots to new settings, sometimes proclaiming contemporary relevance in their titles, and set their fictional detectives to do their bit, taking on intelligence work or seeking out spies. These texts offer nuanced detail about wartime life on the home front, and contain observation and comment on a variety of contemporary social issues.
