摘要

How much were the forests of North America altered by native peoples prior to European settlement? Were the im- pacts of native peoples on forests visible every where or only around scattered settlements? These questions are not just academic; they are tied to deep philosophical debates about the role of present-day humans in ecosystems. For example, some have claimed that if ancient Native American cultures modified most forests to meet their needs, then there are essentially no pristine natural conditions and it does not make sense to maintain or restore a forest that never existed.
