The official name of the Israeli military is the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The Israeli military command is headed by the country's minister of defense. The chain of command continues through the assistant minister of defense, the chief of general staff, and the deputy chief of general staff. Below them are the chief of operations and the chief of intelligence. Significantly, there is no legally designated commander in chief, although administrative and operational control is held by the chief of general staff. The General Staffs Operations Directorate is responsible for directing the various elements of the IDF through its headquarters and the respective territorial commands.
