Japan may be experiencing its worst recession in 50 years, but you wouldn't know it if you examined the recent business results of MYCALCARD Inc., an Osaka-based nonbank finance company that is finding profitable growth in the business of issuing credit cards. Consider this: During the 12 months that ended February 1998, the company, which is a member of the MYCAL Group, Japan's fourth-largest supermarket chain and operator of athletic clubs, cinema complexes and department stores, and so on, posted a whopping 63% gain in net income to $15.2 million on a 14.4% increase in operat- ing revenues to $165.7 million, compared with the year before.
