Michael Hagan was our Entrepreneur of the Year for turning around the moribund NutriSystem weight-loss company. He had beefed up direct response market- ing, outsourced divisions like online customer service to India and hired quarterback Dan Marino to pitch NutriSystem's idiot-proof small-portion meals to over- weight guys. Since then increased competition from GlaxoSmithkline's Alli diet pill and a drop-off in repeat customers have sent NutriSystem's stock tumbling 76% to a recent $15. The Philadelphia company is projecting 2008 revenue of $700 million, $77 million less than its 2007 take. Hagan says he plans to shift the ad pitch to focus on the affordability of sticking to a NutriSystem regimen, which comes to only $10 a day.
