摘要

John Paul DeJoria fights hunger with shovels and seeds, not food. In 2009 the billionaire, who made his fortune with hair care products and tequila, donated $150,000 to start Grow Appalachia, which teaches people in poor rural counties, mostly in Ken tucky, how to cultivate, cook and can their own veg etables. In Appalachia healthy food is expensive and hard to find. Many live on junk food diets that pack on pounds. Recipients of the program (run jointly with Kentucky's Berea College) are asked to teach farming skills to three people. Extra food is given to neighbors or sent to local food banks. Some families plan to sell their produce at farmers' markets. "If you give someone a handout they feel like they're receiving charity," says DeJoria. "Give them a means to take care of themselves and they feel whole."
