MAFF R&D programme to develop detection tests for irradiated food: Introduction and summary of progress

Regulations to control the irradiation of food and its subsequent labelling came into force in 1991 More recently the Food Labelling Regulations 1996 have consolidated the various amendments, including the 1990 amendment for irradiated food, issued under the earlier Food Labelling Regulations 1984. The control regulations lifted the previous prohibition on the sale of irradiated food and introduced a system of licensing for food irradiation facilities. The labelling regulations placed a requirement for all foods or listed ingredients of foods which have been irradiated to carry an indication of such treatment.
