In the late 1980s, Denmark, realising that the food industries were central to its economy, decided to promote food research and reorganise relevant University education to enhance industrial performance in the new competitive international marketplace. The Centre for Advanced Food Studies (LMC) now co-ordinates academic food research in Denmark and assists in collaborative research between industry and the universities and certain institutes. Education has been reorganised so that a synergy from the two complementary backgrounds, that of the academic Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University (KVL) and the more applied Technical University of Denmark (DTU), is obtained. This has lead to research and new graduates for industry that will allow Danish industry to compete effectively and forms a model for others.
