At the leading edge of food research a profile of IFR into the millennium

The Institute of Food Research (IFR) is one of eight institutes with charitable status that are grant-aided by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). Now based on one site at Norwich following consolidation of the Reading Laboratory, IFR occupies buildings on the green-field Norwich Research Park, adjacent to the John Innes Centre and the University of East Anglia. IFR scientists (about 250 strong - and currently recruiting at senior level) undertake independent basic and strategic research for improved food and health. Research advances knowledge, particularly at the molecular level and provides a framework for exploitation of these advances; stimulating industrial innovation, improving the safety of the food supply, helping consumers choose a healthy diet and contributing to the quality of food and ingredients.
